Why innovation in the Global South
The Emerging Biopharmaceuticals sector has moved beyond producing copies. Manufacturers and research institutes across Asia, Africa and Latin America now run their own discovery programmes, process development and clinical trials — yet they often work in isolation, with limited access to shared infrastructure and funding.
The Innovation Hub builds R&D&I networks for biopharmaceuticals and biosimilars across the Global South, so that a team in São Paulo, Pune, Cape Town or Cairo can find complementary expertise inside the network before looking elsewhere.
What the hub does
- Technical cooperation and innovation: connecting members around shared development programmes, technology platforms and unmet medical needs.
- Patent intelligence: a data platform providing access to current and expired patents relevant to biosimilar development.
- Workshops, webinars and working groups on emerging technologies, including mRNA, monoclonal antibodies, recombinant proteins and advanced therapies.
- Support for consortia applying to multilateral calls, such as the BRICS STI Framework Programme and the Global Coalition for Local and Regional Production.
